Fatigue is the number one symptom of a slow metabolism.  And what’s the main cause of a slow metabolism?  STRESS!!!
Too much cortisol in your system hinders the thyroid from working like it’s supposed to.  It slows down, and so does metabolism.
One big stressor your body undergoes every day is keeping your blood sugar stable.  It needs to have a certain amount of glucose flowing in the blood at all times to be able to use to make energy.  When it’s too low from fasting, not eating enough calories, not eating enough carbs, or not eating often enough, your energy lowers.
But to keep you alive, cortisol is released. It knocks on the door of your muscles and fat to get some stored glucose to use for energy.  That process (called gluconeogenesis) is stressful!  Cortisol is so important for keeping homeostasis and keeping your body alive and functioning well in emergencies.  But it’s not a hormone we want being pumped out all day every day if we want a happy and healthy metabolism.
Too much exercise, especially cardio, is also not good for someone that needs to recover from a slow metabolism and fatigue.  High intensity exercise raises cortisol, and we want to keep that down and get out of that fight-or-flight state.  Instead, try lower intensity strength training, yoga, or walks.  Or just rest when you’re low on energy.  Listen to that signal from your body and respect it.

I could check off several of these back in the day. I used to wake up with a body temperature consistently in the 95s - not good! I was dragging through the day, my hair felt like straw, and I was losing it by the clumps. Not to mention digestive issues and eczema that I could never get to completely heal (it only appeared to be healed when I avoided foods that triggered it - and that’s not actual healing). My body was screaming for help.
And here’s the thing:  all these seemingly unrelated things were actually connected. They were all red flags that my metabolism was off.
And when your metabolism slows down, your body conserves energy. It’s not making a whole lot of energy, so it’s not going to prioritize things unnecessary for survival like digestion, hair growth, healthy skin, or reproducing. 
So you might have symptoms like:
🚩Constant fatigue (even after getting a full night of sleep)
🚩Digestive problems like bloating and constipation
🚩Hormonal imbalances that mess with your mood, period, weight, and fertility
🚩Poor sleep quality, even though you’re tired and NEED to sleep
🚩Unexplained weight gain that you can’t seem to get rid of

1️⃣First off, fuel!  Seriously. You gotta put gas in your tank in order to run. I used to think eating “clean” was enough. Just cut out gluten, dairy, and processed foods, and I’ll be good, right? Nope! 
Eating clean is important, but balance is so important too. Protein, fats, carbs—they all need to be there in good proportions to each other for healthy blood sugar, metabolism, and energy. 
It’s also important that you’re eating ENOUGH food to actually create energy with.
2️⃣Next is minerals! Minerals are key to kicking off enzymes in your body and powering your metabolism. One really important one that I see a lot of women deficient in is potassium. You gotta have it to help get glucose and thyroid hormone into your cell, and therefore, for energy production to happen. So, eat the bananas, oranges, coconut water, bone broth, and potatoes. 🍌Your body will thank you.
3️⃣And lastly is a mindset shift that needs to happen for so many tired mamas. We live in a world that glorifies the hustle and “girl boss” mentality. But, unlike what society tells us, your worth is not determined by how much you get done in day. And keeping a running to do list and trying to DO as much as you can in a day is not what your depleted body needs.
Instead, pause and focus on being present in the moment. That concept alone did wonders for my stress level, brought my anxiety down, and was one of the things that really got my energy back on track.

Imagine taking a fun vacation with your family wit Imagine taking a fun vacation with your family without your eyelids drooping and feeling like you need a nap every 5 minutes. 😩Yep, that was me! And let me tell you—having energy on vacation is a total game-changer.
We finally crossed off that trip out West from our bucket list a few weeks ago (our dream is to have a bigger homestead with cows one day and we LOVED seeing all the ranches). From Salt Lake City, Utah to northern Montana, visiting Grand Teton, Glacier, and Yellowstone National Parks. It was everything. 
My favorite parts, besides of course taking a break from all the usual day-to-day responsibilities like all the cooking and cleaning, were seeing the bison, antelope, moose, and elk, spending quality time with my family, and all the awesome sights not that far from each other like the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, Grand Prismatic Spring, Old Faithful geyser, and so many beautiful waterfalls.💦
But the kicker? I actually had the energy to enjoy exploring these places. Before I would have gotten exhausted just thinking about it. No joke, vacations used to wear me out. And I couldn’t wait to get home and get in my own bed. But this year was different. 3 national parks in 2 weeks and lots of hiking, and I didn’t die.
No naps needed (although, to be honest, it did take me a few days when I got home to recover from the jet lag). Just real energy, thanks to getting to the root of my fatigue and putting in the time to heal my metabolism.

When I first started experiencing my fatigue, I we When I first started experiencing my fatigue, I went from doctor to doctor and had a TON of tests done to “rule things out.” And the tests almost always came back as “negative.” Have you been there?
Or maybe you’re on the other side of the spectrum.  Maybe you have had some “positives” on your bloodwork. 
Either way it’s important to address the root cause of your fatigue (because when it comes down to it low iron or hormones on blood work is not the root cause).
Being given a label & some meds doesn’t fix the issue. 
Just identifying that your iron is low, you have an infection, you have hypothyroidism, your hormones are out of balance, etc. is not enough.  It doesn’t tell the whole story.
Why is it that your iron is showing up low in your bloodwork?
Why is your thyroid under-functioning?
Why are your hormones low?
Why was your body not resilient and strong enough to defend against the pathogen? 
The reason I focus on metabolism so much is because I see how it plays such a huge role in creating a healthy environment in your body.  A slow metabolism sets the stage for:
❌poor digestion
❌poor immune health
❌overgrowth of pathogens
❌dysregulated iron (because it’s usually not actually low - just showing up as low in your blood and causing havoc inside your tissues)
❌hormones imbalance 
And more
When we dig deeper and look at WHY metabolism is slow, the three most common, but often overlooked, things I see are: 
👉Stress
👉Nutrition
👉Environmental toxins
But it has been my experience that when you address the root of the problem and work on these three things, you’ll see your energy & quality of life go up and up!

Feeling drained day after day? You may be wonderin Feeling drained day after day? You may be wondering if your hormones are out of balance, and you’re probably correct. And maybe you’re considering getting your hormones tested and trying hormone replacement therapy. Buuuut…hold on.
Even if your hormones are out of whack - that isn’t the root cause of your fatigue - it’s another symptom, just like the fatigue is.
When I found out several of my hormones were low, I jumped on the hormone med train. I took meds for progesterone, thyroid, estrogen, and testosterone….and hardly noticed a difference at all.
Why? Because adding more hormones to my system is not what was needed. Addressing the root cause of why my hormones were low was.
Hormones are your body’s little chemical messengers, delivering vital info from your brain to various parts of your body and back. They run the communication to ensure things are running smoothly in your body. When the lines of communication are messing up, it can cause problems. But it’s important to dig deeper. Why are they messed up in the first place?
It comes down to your METABOLISM.
When your metabolism slows down, the production of hormones also slows down and those messages aren’t able to be delivered as well as they should.
The good news? Improving your metabolism will also improve your hormones.
So if you’re constantly feeling tired, and you think your hormones might be to blame, take a look at your metabolism. It’s not about taking the right medication or supplement to boost your hormones. It’s about understanding how your body produces energy and optimizing that process.
This means zooming out and looking at the whole picture - the food you eat, your sleep, your stress levels - everything that can impact how your body produces and uses energy. And guess what? When we focus on improving our metabolism, we also improve our hormone balance.

Ever been told that you have low iron levels? Or b Ever been told that you have low iron levels? Or been diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia? I, for one, used to think that low iron was a huge culprit of fatigue, until I dug deeper.
Now, don't get me wrong. Iron is essential for good energy. It’s needed to produce red blood cells and helps shuttle oxygen around the body. Gotta have oxygen for energy!
But low iron levels on blood tests, especially if it’s just ferritin your doctor is checking, may not always be telling the whole story. It might just mean that the iron is hanging out in other places besides the blood, like your liver, heart, and pancreas.
More often than not, fatigue isn't about not having enough iron, but more about iron DYSREGULATION. Usually, the iron's there, and it’s probably even there in excess. But it’s stuck in the wrong places, in your tissues, instead of doing its job in the blood.
Iron is so abundant on Earth (about 35% of Earth’s mass is iron), and it’s fortified in a ton of foods. Since the 1930s, iron has been added to foods like cereal, bread, and pasta. And here's the kicker - since iron is so important, our bodies actually RECYCLE iron. That’s right! (When everything is working properly) it recycles 24 mg of iron each day. We only need to eat enough to make up a tiny deficit each day, something easy to do unless you're completely plant-based and eat zero meat.
So why's the iron acting out and stuck in our tissues instead of being recycled like it should be? A big part of it is a lack of OTHER nutrients to guide iron and tell it where to go.
Simply popping iron pills because a blood test says you’re low, can lead to more health issues like inflammation and increased risk of disease. Lots of iron stuck in your tissues is a recipe for oxidation (think rust - like what happens when your kids leaves their bike outside and it rains).
Addressing “iron deficient anemia” doesn't mean just bumping up your iron. It's about ensuring your vitamins and minerals are in BALANCE with each other. It’s about getting to the root cause, supporting the systems in your body, and correcting the reason iron isn’t being regulated like it should.
